Each month NautilusCD chooses five shareware/freeware programs for your evaluation.
Sometimes these programs will carry a theme, and sometimes they'll simply be a mixture of items the editors think will be helpful to you.
COMMAND LINE INTERFACES
This month our focus is on command line interfaces. Most of us can type commands faster than we can open File Manager and locate the same command on the menu. But that doesn't mean we want to go back to DOS for everything. Command line interfaces give you the speed of DOS without having to leave Windows.

WINCMD
Originally a specialized shell to allow aliases and other UNIX-like commands on a DOS system, WinCMD allows the same capabilities in Windows.
POWERLINE
PowerLine is fully compatible with COMMAND.COM from MS-DOS version 6.0. This means that you can use all commands you are used to, both in Windows
and MS-DOS. Furthermore, it adds many extensions including the use of cursor keys to edit command lines and support for aliases.
SMILERSHELL
This Windows command line supports pipes, redirection
and internal DOS commands (and runs Windows programs, too).

WINCLI
WinCLI performs most of the functions that the standard DOS prompt, COMMAND.COM, does. But with WinCLI you are able to run Windows programs by typing their name instead of looking for an icon. WinCLI requires less than 40 Kilobytes when fully loaded. Since WinCLI is a Windows application, it doesn't have to be manually closed when you quit your Windows session.
ABCMD
This Windows command line interface offers intuitive up-front controls for easy, fast access to programs and functions. It also provides additional features including human-engineered, minimal-time/hand-motion controls; multiple commands per command line; ten handy memory buttons that store up to ten command lines; an alarm function; and Quick F1 key online help.

Windows UnArchive (WUNA) is used to extract and decompress files from ZIP and ARJ format archives. It replaces both command-line DOS unarchivers and Windows-based front end programs for those utilities.
The NautilusCD Disc Index makes use of a custom version of WUNA to provide "built-in" unzipping from this disc.
If you choose to use WUNA, be sure to register with the author.

We hope you never run into a virus, but just in case...
This section's collection of virus detection and removal utilities is provided for your convenience. Use these programs against viruses that may have already infected your system and to keep away new viruses.
In addition to software, we regularly publish a database of virus and anti-virus related information to help you determine what may be plaguing your system and what to do about it.
Note that all of the programs in this section are distributed in .ZIP format. "This is to ensure that the software is authentic and free of tampering," as McAfee Associates so aptly explains.

CLEAN-UP
Repair infected areas on your system with CLEAN-UP (CLEAN), a virus disinfection program for IBM PCs and compatibles.
VSHIELD
The best anti-virus defense is prevention. Use VSHIELD to
prevent a virus from infecting your IBM PC or compatible computer. VSHIELD searches the PC for known computer viruses in memory, the partition table, the boot sector, system files and itself. It then installs itself as a Terminate-and-Stay-Resident (TSR) program and scans all programs before allowing the system to execute them.
In addition, we've included virus detection and removal programs for networks and OS/2 machines.

Each NautilusCD article includes a variety of icons; each icon type opens or "expands" its multimedia story component.
Let's begin with text:
Graphics add a lot to a story.
When you see an image icon like the one on this cartoon, try it.
See? The Media Extension button expanded the picture!
Now, let's add sound. There are three types of audio: digitized sound files, CD tracks and MIDI.
And NautilusCD takes advantage of MPC's MIDI capability.

You'll see three more media types making use of "extension" buttons throughout articles in NautilusCD:
When it's important that you have access to files or applications directly on the disc, look for this folder icon.
Digital video plays an increasingly important role in multimedia communications. To view movies within stories, just click the film strip icon.
Occasionally you'll see an icon like the one below denoting a special Link form. You can open it, fill it out and use your modem to send it to us electronically.

In addition to the resources and information published through-out the magazine, there are thousands of directories and files to explore on this CD ROM.
The NautilusCD Disc Index is the standalone application that makes it possible to do so.
Click the Tools button found on the bottom of each page to open the Tools Palette, then select Index (as highlighted, above).
Search for any subject or item on the disc. Open it. Copy it to your hard drive. Print it. Or access the Index Help files for assistance (and more complete instructions).
Scroll through the Index at File or Directory level; see what's in each listing plus its path name and basic information such as type and size. Often there's a full description with important information on registration, upgrades and more.
Explore! The Index provides a world of capabilities not available in the magazine.

ABC LEARN
This game helps young children learn their ABCs. Using the mouse, the object is to choose the letters in alphabetical order.
The next letter may not necessarily be in order on the letter selection area of the game, depending on the level chosen from the Options menu.
When the alphabet has been completed in the correct order, the child is rewarded with the ABC song. The game has plenty to keep the interest of young children. For example, touching a correct letter, a wrong sequence letter or any place on the form will create a sound.

123 LEARN
This companion program to ABC Learn helps children learn numbers and counting. Like the previous program, 123 Learn keeps the attention of most kids.
The goal of this game is to choose the numbers in order.
The top display box shows the numbers from 1 to 28. The second display box shows the child's progress in the current game.
The child uses the mouse to point to the next number in sequence. This next number may not necessarily be in order on the number selection area of the game, depending on the level chosen from the Options menu. When the numbers have been chosen in the correct order, the child is rewarded with a song.

FAMILY MEMORY MATCH
This Windows shareware memory match game can be played by
the whole family to develop and stretch short term memory skills. Because anyone can have a good memory, children often play as well or better than adults.
The game is designed to be played by two people or against the computer if you lack a human opponent. You can control the number of memory buttons,
decide how smart the computer
is or just show pictures for the
littlest children.

Storm Technology's Adobe charged accelerator specifically targets the most time-consuming, computer-intensive operations that are critical for working with your images. Many Photoshop tasks--such as Image Size, Rotate, Gaussian Blur, Unsharp Mask, Sharpen Edges, Feather, Despeckle, and many more--are now improved from 3 to 10 times.
The software works transparently--you use Photoshop's own menu commands and dialog boxes and the filters work just as they always have, only much faster.

COMPTON'S PATENT FIGHT
NOT OVER YET
The US Patent and Trademark Office has said that while it has rejected all 41 of Compton's claims in its patent on multimedia, this is not the final word. Compton's has two months to respond to the reversal of its patent, issued in August 1993, which appeared to give the company a corner on the entire concept of multimedia.
After considerable industry protest, USPTO Commissioner Bruce Lehman agreed to reexamine the Compton's patent. Recently Lehman announced the rejection of all 41 claims in the patent, on the grounds that, as written, the claims were obvious and not new.

PC TOOLS FOR WINDOWS 2.0
Imagine having a personal consultant to help you avoid Windows crashes, solve tough configuration problems or improve your PC's performance. That's how PC Tools for Windows works. CrashGuard monitors memory, system resources and
disk use, then gives you audible and on-screen warnings if conditions could lead to a crash.
System Consultant analyzes your hardware and software and suggests changes for optimal performance. You can make these changes immediately with the Do-It key and reverse them with Undo.
INI-Consultant helps you edit those cryptic .INI files, explaining each line and what options are available--all in plain English.

Spring is the season of renewal: flowers bloom, trees bud, the grass turns green once more. Spring is also a time to remember loved ones. In "Life Goes On," the narrator fondly remembers his brother, who was always there...and always will be.

Blending their New Orleans roots with a heavy dose of R&B,
Memphis sound and rock 'n roll, the subdudes' High Street debut, Annunciation, features some of the band's best material to date.
"Annunciation is a celebration of our new existence," says bassist Johnny Ray Allen. "We're on an emotional, physical and spiritual upswing, and the music is really clickin'."

Keyboardist John Magnie explains,
"Annunciation has a lot of
symbolism besides the obvious
religious overtones. We recorded
this album on Annunciation
Street, which runs through some
of New Orleans' rougher neigh-
borhoods, so the title also refers
to some of life's most extreme
contrasts--good versus evil."

We've collected a handful of shareware WAV players. Some simply play WAV files, some contain a variety of options for your WAVs, and some do more than play WAV files. Be assured that all will get the job done.
If you use one or more of these programs, please remember to register the shareware with its author.

WAVSORTER
This application provides an intuitive way to sort sound files. It uses a folder as a metaphor for a directory. Once you've assigned directories to the folders, you sort files by dragging them to the appropriate folder. Behind the scenes, WavSorter copies or moves the file to the folder's directory.

Dawn at the pond can be an eye-opening experience. Being outdoors before the sun comes up can awaken an appreciation for the natural beauty around us that other times of day can't approach. It certainly is a very special time of day for me.
One thing I try to do is select prime east-facing venues that will make ideal settings for early morning photography. Since I live in Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, water is not in short supply. Lakes, rivers and ponds are favorite spots when weather conditions are just right.

Dawn at the Pond continued...
Some of my pictures are taken as much as an hour before the sun breaks over the horizon. Taking a tripod and getting out of bed early are essential. This is practical in Minnesota until early June and then again starting in mid-August or so. Otherwise you have to be incredibly keen to get up so early in the morning.
Approach your spot very slowly and quietly--you never know what wildlife you will see. Sometimes all I see are a few ducks or geese, but occasionally I get lucky and spot a deer drinking or an eagle fishing.
The early morning mist and fog not only help to diffuse the light and muffle sound, but also tend to obscure telephone wires and other distracting elements of the landscape.

Dawn at the Pond continued...
As these photos show, I like shooting into the light. Shooting subjects that are "backlit" promises some dynamic results but requires careful technique.
Dawn at the pond can become a highlight of your day. Let its beauty and magic inspire you!

These computer graphic images were created in a graduate class in 3D imaging at the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) at The Ohio State University. Under ACCAD's auspices, budding computer artists are granted access to the latest modeling and rendering tools to express their creativity.
This month's contributor, Tonya Ramsey, discusses her work:
"Bright Face was created with Painter 2.0 and XPOST. To me the piece looks outward with joy to the future.

"Winter Morning and Web Heart are both images rendered in Painter and Photoshop. Winter Morning I did last year, and it explores the first frosty hints of winter. Web Heart looks at the vulnerability and trust we must share with one another in any relationship."
At ACCAD, artists like Ramsey participate in creating a context that includes computer and artistic disciplines. The study of an aesthetic message delivered via technology can have an impact on software development, advertising, the performing and visual arts and other media.

adjustments to the way your fonts print at different point sizes. This ensures that the fonts give clear, crisp output at any resolution from 1 to 999 point.
The package includes a font management utility that handles the extensive font library included with the package as well as any other TrueType fonts you may already own.
Since TrueType fonts use processing time, you probably don't want hundreds of fonts activated on your system at one time. With Typecase you can activate and deactivate groups of fonts quickly and easily.

You never know when you might need a video clip of mad scientists at play, explosives, peaceful nature scenes, historic events or wild animals to add panache to your multimedia presentation.
Providing film resources to multimedia producers is a service of Archive Films, a leading stock footage house. Their collection contains over 9,000 hours of historical and archival footage, including footage on virtually every 20th century development in technology.
In this ironic public service announcement, James Dean provides his views on fast driving.

This month the topic revolves around a small yellow bird. . . .
I have created a video clip featuring a two-year-old Cockatiel named Dustin. To this I will add a music sound track (also known as a music bed) and a voice narration. These resources are included at the end of this tutorial for you to try for yourself.
I am concentrating on the creation of the individual audio elements this month: the music and the voice. Next month I will merge the two together and add them to the video clip.
SO WHERE DO I BEGIN?
First you need to prepare a music sound track. I chose an instrumental section from the album "Love Saves the Day" by Brainchild (C) Kaleidoscope Records, 1993. (Remember that you must obtain permission to

use copyrighted music in your presentations.) The music should be just a little longer than you actually need, say about four or five seconds, so that you can add a nice professional fade to the clip (more on this next month).
RECORDING VOICE NARRATION
Many people (me included) don't enjoy listening to the sound of their own voice. So, if you can, try to persuade a friend or a family member to read your narration for you. You will be in
a better position to adjust recording levels and take notes as the recording progresses. If the recording is a lengthy one (more than two minutes) you will benefit from the opportunity to take notes. Notes are invaluable at editing time.

THE MICROPHONE
Often I am asked "what kind of microphone should I use?" Well, my usual answer is "the best you can afford!" Seriously though, the type of microphone you receive with your sound card package will just about do the job for voice recordings. You should spend no more than $20-$30 for a microphone of reasonable quality.
Next month I will show you how to fix problems in voice recordings. It's a lot easier than you might think.

The MIDI Connection is pleased to present music of 19th century American composers: "The Banjo," a frenetic and virtuosic showpiece from America's first great concert artist, Louis Moreau Gottschalk; "Woodland Sketches," a suite of ten short piano pieces by Edward McDowell; and a quintet of ragtime gems from the likes of Scott Joplin and Joseph Lamb.

LOUIS MOREAU GOTTSCHALK
(1829-1869)
Gottschalk was the first American-born virtuoso pianist to achieve worldwide fame and was one of music's great free-spirited vagabonds. Born in New Orleans and having studied in Paris, he also lived in the West Indies and Brazil.
Due to his many influences, it is difficult to know exactly which of Gottschalk's works best communicate the man. We have chosen to highlight here what some consider to be his "signature" piece, "The Banjo, Op. 15" (c. 1851).

EDWARD MCDOWELL
(1860-1908)
Although born in New York City, McDowell spent his early life in Germany and there received his musical training. At age 28 he returned to the States and settled in Boston.
It is New England that seems to have influenced McDowell most. The Woodland Sketches piano miniatures featured here reflect this love for the Northeastern landscape. The music itself, in the composer's own words, seeks to paint an image in the mind "through delicate shades of sensation."

RAGTIME
Ragtime laid the foundation for jazz, blues and popular music as we know it. Even so-called "classical" music felt itself infected by this upstart genre as "respectable" composers like Milhaud, Stravinsky and Copland were all drawn toward the harmonies and intoxicating rhythms of ragtime and early
jazz. Take a jaunt back in time with these great rags.

PUT IT ON PHOTOCD
One of the easiest ways to get your photos into your computer is to use the Kodak PhotoCD technology.
The PhotoCD system enables you to take standard 35mm pictures and have them scanned at a
photofinisher or service bureau onto special compact discs. Compatible CD ROM-equipped computers can read the discs, offering you easy, inexpensive access to high-resolution color images. Plus, you can view your pictures on your television using a PhotoCD, Apple PowerCD, 3DO/Panasonic R.E.A.L. or CD-I player.
In addition, the new PhotoCD Portfolio disc format combines high-resolution images with text, graphics, interactive menus and sound to present information in a new way, allowing you to create your own multimedia interactive applications.

SCANNING YOUR PHOTOS
Another way to create digital images is to scan pictures into your computer. Because you can scan from almost anything, you can incorporate both drawings and photos into your projects.
Probably the most well-known scanner manufacturer is Hewlett-
Packard. Their ScanJet products come with control software that makes the scanning process easier by providing basic functions on the top screen and a complete set of advanced features that pull down from the menu.
Other features to look for in scanners are a live preview function that shows you the results of your changes immediately on screen, and automatic contrast and brightness settings that eliminate scanning guesswork.

SHOOT FOR YOUR DIGITAL BEST
Finally, if you don't want to fuss with a two-step process of taking the pictures and then having to convert them to digital format, consider using one of the new digital cameras like Canon's RC-570.
These new cameras record images digitally--Canon uses a reusable floppy disk. That means you can simply download these pictures into your computer, avoiding developing costs and enjoying more control over the final product.
In addition to the camera's through-the-lens (TTL)
recording capability, images can be input directly into the RC-570 from a VCR, TV or visualizer and then displayed on a video monitor or output to a color video printer for hard copy prints. An optional film adapter permits 35mm slides or negatives to be copied onto the camera's floppy disk.

COMPUTER SET UP
Before going into Adobe Photoshop, you'll need to make a few adjustments to your working environment so differences in your display don't lead you astray when correcting an image's color. Here's what you need to do to set things up.
SMALLER PICTURES
The first useful thing a desktop publisher can learn in Photoshop is how to make an image file smaller--cropping out unneeded areas speeds up printing and makes DTP layout files smaller. And Photoshop itself works better with smaller files.

Now that you've scanned, cropped and improved your images, what can you do with them? Pictures can improve almost anything. Use them to brighten your desktop, as a screen saver or to create personalized birthday cards for your close friends and relatives. Use them in annual reports, in multimedia training slide shows or in advertising.
On the following pages you'll find a few suggestions the NautilusCD staff came up with to help you get started.

GREETING CARDS
Create a special card for your favorite person to let them know that they mean more to you than a store-bought card can express. Print it on your home printer or take it to a copy center or service bureau. They can print your color art for as little as $10.
DESKTOP BACKGROUNDS
Use an especially dramatic picture as a backdrop for your desktop or as a screen saver. It's easy to use the Control Panel to make wallpaper from your photos. Below you'll find SSCORP, a shareware screen saver that will use your images.

Where do you turn when you need a shot of the Mayflower for a multimedia project? Until CD ROM technology, you might have had to rent photos from a stock image company or hire a photographer. Both these options may have been inconvenient, time-consuming and expensive.
You now have access to thousands of pictures on discs covering subjects as diverse as food, space and industry. And, these photos cost just pennies to use. You'll find samples from photo clip art discs in a folder at the end of this article.

Maybe you want to add photos to a presentation or report. Or perhaps you want to create a catalog of your products on disk. Or you just want to send a disc to Grandma filled with pictures of your baby's first steps. How do you get your photos into the computer without investing a lot of time or learning a lot of complicated processes?
Fortunately the technology currently available is simple to use and provides excellent quality images. We discuss three methods here: Kodak PhotoCD, scanning and still video cameras.
